Different representations - "Women in Black"

This scene is from the 'women in black' opening sequence. The characters are presented as happy young children playing in their bedroom. The costumes and the props suggest that the shot was set around the Victorian era e.g. the black pram and the lace dresses that the girls are wearing.

In this shot the characters look like they come from a quite wealthy background by the way their hair is well groomed which suggests that they live in a successful working class family.

In this screenshot, all three of the characters seem to be looking towards the door as if someone had called them. The girls are showing a blank expression almost as if they were possessed. The shot has been taking from the person at the doors P.O.V which keeps the identity of the person anonymous and also keeps the audience intrigued.

The next shot shows three windows which immediately the audience is drawn considering there are three girls. This links to the enigma code as the audience are constantly asking question to what might happen next.

This shot is a close up shot of one of the girls foot crushing a dolls head. This makes the audience question if they are possessed. Her boot suggest that it's set in the victorian era. The crushing of the doll suggest the change in the girls behaviour, because from the start the girls where caring for the dolls to now crushing it.

In the shot, the girls have a strong blank expression on their faces and are brightly lit up by the sunlight. They have suddenly started to walk towards the window. The positioning of the girls suggests that they are walking towards the window which might suggest they are about to jump out.

In this screenshot is a mid shot of the girls standing on the window ledge. The light that's coming from outside almost looks like they are glowing which gives an eerie effect. The way the girls have walked on the ledge without a single expression suggest to the audience that they aren't in control of their bodies - as if someone or something is controlling them.

This final shot his a close up of a doll, this is used as a prop for the girls whilst they were playing. the hair and costume used for the doll has a lot of effect in emphasising the fact that this film is following the theory of the enigma code. the positioning of the doll suggests that the doll was watching the girls as they jumped out of the window.
